While an MOT and chassis engine service keep your motorhome roadworthy, an annual habitation check ensures the living accommodation remains safe, dry, and compliant. Leisure vehicles endure constant road vibration, abrupt weather shifts, and extended storage periods—all of which gradually compromise body seals, electrical joints, and gas pipework.

1. Spongy Flooring or Faint Musty Odours

Damp is the single biggest threat to motorhome longevity and resale value. By the time water ingress becomes visible to the naked eye as discoloured wallpaper or black mould, structural delamination has often already begun. If your floor feels unusually soft underfoot or an unshakeable damp smell lingers when stepping inside, moisture has likely penetrated the outer skin.

2. Lazy Orange Flames on Gas Burners

When operating correctly, LPG burners on your hob, oven, or water heater should produce a crisp, steady blue flame. A floppy yellow or orange flame, or visible soot accumulating above burner heads, signals incomplete combustion and dangerous carbon monoxide risks. An engineer tests gas line pressures and cleans jets to restore safe airflow.

3. Rapid Leisure Battery Drain or Flickering Lights

If your 12V cabin lights flicker or the leisure battery struggles to hold charge overnight despite being on mains hook-up, you may have an earth fault, parasitic drain, or charger unit failure. Habitation checks thoroughly test both 12V and 230V systems under load.

4. Stiff Window Catches and Cracking Sealant

Rubber seals around rooflights, Seitz windows, and external locker doors harden and shrink under UV exposure. When seals degrade, rain driven by 60mph motorway speeds will inevitably find an entry point. Routine visual checks often catch deteriorated mastic before ingress occurs.

5. More Than 12 Months Since Your Last Inspection

Most leisure vehicle manufacturers require documented annual habitation inspections by certified technicians to keep bodywork warranties valid. Even on older vehicles, an annual check provides invaluable peace of mind before long road trips.

"Catching a minor seal defect early typically costs a few pounds to re-mastic. Leaving it unchecked can lead to multi-thousand-pound timber rebuilds."

What to Expect During Your MCS Check

Our mobile engineers arrive with calibrated damp metres, gas manometers, and electrical testers. You receive a detailed multi-page diagnostic report outlining all readings, any advisory warnings, and a clear certificate of inspection.
